Why Does the Good Life End?

In this article historian Victor Davis Hanson takes a look at past examples of cultures that have made the same mistakes that we are now making. One of the problems with the philosophy of big government as Mommy and Daddy is that, like rust, it eats away at the metal that holds up a free society. Individual responsibility and self-directed effort are the moral foundation of a free nation. Citizens must be able to do for themselves if the nation is to remain strong. But breed a large and growing dependent class and the culture decays. Decadent cultures are soft cultures; more concerned with the next welfare payment than in improving their own existence through effort and hard work. That’s where we are now, and it never leads to a good outcome.
