Rick Perry’s Border

One of the problems that we have as conservatives is that leadership in the Republican party often says one thing and then does another. So it is with Rick Perry. I recently had an on-line discussion with another conservative from Texas who is convinced that Gov. Perry is doing everything he can to deal with the illegal immigration on the southern border. But with a little digging I find that Gov. Perry has himself been a contributor to the ongoing problems down there by putting into place policies that encourage the illegals to come here in the first place. For the foreseeable future, much of the Republican leadership will be of this sort, with just a few exceptions. But we will have little choice but to vote for them because the alternatives are worse.

From Breitbart.com we get this op-ed that details the policies of Rick Perry that have helped to make the situation at the Texas border worse that it had to be. So sad. Below is a pull quote from the story, but go and read the whole thing yourself. It is vital that conservatives know just what they are getting when they vote for any politician. We cannot afford to be unaware of the flaws of these people, even if we end up having to vote them into office.

Perry vigorously defends his DREAM Act, which gives in-state tuition breaks and taxpayer funded grants to illegals to attend Texas colleges. In this August 2001 speech to the Border Summit, Perry bragged about signing the Texas DREAM Act into law, “We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, ‘we don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there.’ And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders, the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede.”

Who can forget Perry’s statement in one of the early 2011 GOP Presidential primary debates when he said that those who disagree with him on this issue “have no heart at all”?

The Perry position, added to President Obama’s green light, spells “come on in”.
