Signs and Portents

In a stunning upset Eric Cantor has lost his primary run to Tea Party challenger Dave Brat. It should be noted that Cantor outspent Brat by a nearly 20 to 1 margin. Cantor raised over 5 million dollars to Brat’s two hundred thousand. If money were all that a political race was about, then Cantor would have coasted to an easy victory. But that’s not what happened. Clearly a strong message has been sent to the Republican establishment that the status quo is not acceptable. And Democrats ought to be shaking in their boots since this is a precursor to the coming November elections. This loss for Cantor is a political earthquake that will have implications for both parties for some time to come.

The primary reason for this upset is that regular Americans have become more and more alarmed about the direction that the Obama-Fuhrer and the Democrats are taking the country. As a nation we are facing a myriad of problems that both party establishments are creating through their various statist-oriented policies. The Democrats are more overt in their love of big, intrusive government of course, but the Republicans have done little to create confidence in their leadership that would cause conservatives in the base to be enthusiastic. Republican leadership has been a large part of the problem. They do little to stop Obama’s lawless activity and unconstitutional actions. And often they seem supportive in a passive-aggressive sort of way. Their continuing attacks on Tea Party and the conservative base have not worked to their advantage.

For example, one of the issues that demonstrate how out of touch the Republican establishment has been is amnesty. Consider the emerging catastrophe on the southern border.

If you have not been paying attention, the Obama administration is openly importing Mexican refugees into southern states by the thousands every day. . Indeed, the Obama administration is openly at war with the regular people of this country. In an effort to import new citizens to replace regular non-socialist Americans, poor and uneducated Mexicans, who will be easier to manipulate as long as they get lots of welfare, are being shipped north in massive numbers. And for some unfathomable reason Cantor was in favor of even more amnesty. Like the other examples of lawless behavior of this administration, this action is designed to undermine the stability of the country and to destroy the fabric of the nation. And the Republican establishment has done nothing to stop it. For Republicans to stand by and do nothing, as they have, is no longer acceptable. And so we see Cantor booted from his seat by a newcomer with no previous experience.

There is a sense, I think, among both conservatives and now many regular independents and even some Democrats that things have gotten seriously out of control in our nation’s capital. Spending and debt are rocketing skywards with no sign of stopping. The NSA spies on us; the IRS targets us; the EPA strangles us; the elites reward themselves with our hard earned money; the White House and the media mock us and no one seems to be pushing back except for those in alternative media. This victory is therefore a huge push back against the ruling class that has been long overdue. I think we will see this get the attention of those cloistered elites in a way that has not happened in some time. And with luck it is a portent of things to come.
